If you are planning a fancy dress party or have been invited to one as a guest then the chances are you’re going to need to go to a fancy dress shop before the big day.
Whether there is a specific theme to the party, such as superheroes, fairytale or animals, or you can turn up in any kind of fancy dress, there’ll be a costume that’s right for you in one of the UK’s hundreds of fancy dress shops.
It is worth having some idea of what type of costume you want before you go to a fancy dress shop, or else you may be overwhelmed with the choice of costumes on offer and not be able to pick one! When you arrive at a fancy dress shop, the assistant will ask what type of costume you want, such as historical, fairytale, horror, Christmas, or film star, and the assistant will then be able to show you the selection of costumes they have in that particular style.
Many fancy dress costumes only come in one size so it is worth trying on the outfit in the shop before you agree to hire it. All fancy dress shops should have a changing room so once you’ve selected some options the shop assistant should be able to show you to a dressing room, where you can try your fancy dress costume on in private.
Once you’ve chosen the fancy dress costume and have tried it on, you will have to decide whether you need any accessories, such as a wig, hat, mask or make-up, to complete the fancy dress look. If you do, then the fancy dress shop should have a range of accessories for you to buy or hire.
Some fancy dress shops only offer outfits to hire, so it is worth checking when it needs to be returned and whether you need to have it dry-cleaned before taking it back. Other fancy dress shops, and many online fancy dress websites, offer costumes to buy, so you can keep it for the next fancy dress party you’re invited to!
Finally, if possible it may be worth going to a fancy dress shop that is registered with the British Costume Association (BCA), the industry’s trade association that is committed to offering customers high standards whether they are hiring or buying fancy dress or theatrical costumes.
